Recreational Gold Panning

Although I make my living (last 38 years) in plaster home repair and remodeling, my fun stuff revolves around outdoor recreation.

Growing up in a hunting and fishing family, I got the bug as a boy and have spent many happy days over the years in pursuit of wild game. Just being outside with the sun shining and the birds singing is always a thrill in itself, whether or not you get anything for the table.

A few years ago, I got introduced to another variety of outdoor recreation - gold panning. My cousin was into the pursuit of the "yaller stuff" and I tagged along with him one summer day at a stream about an hour and a half from my house. Sure enough, he started finding yellow flakes in his pan.

He showed me where to look and how to work the sand and gravel I scooped into my gold pan. It took a little time for me to get the hang of it, but I did - and I was hooked.

It's not so much the owning of the gold, but chasing it is where the fun lies. Just panning, no one's going to get rich, but it's like a kid treasure hunting. Looking and learning and the thrill of discovery - that's the essense of it.

Like every gold panner I have ever met, we all have our little vials of gold dust to show off. Now that gold prices are climbing pretty rapidly, suddenly those little vials are starting to be worth something.

Over the years, I have learned a few tricks. I have gotten much better at finding gold, and much faster at retrieving it. I always find some gold every time I go. When I was a Scoutmaster, I took my troop more than once to a creek about an hour away. The boys learned how to pan, and they had their little samples they could show their friends.

But, gold panning is hard (though fun) work. Your back - really, your whole body - gets a good workout. The boys soon would grow more interested in swimming and fishing than panning, which was fine because they were having a grand time in any case. Those boys have grown up with many fond memories of those scout outings.

Now my gold panning buddy and I go together, usually in the summer and early fall, and we explore different gold-bearing creeks and rivers. Some are better than others but we always have a good time. Our state, Oregon, has many such streams.

Gold panning, finding that gold and bringing it home, is a premier outdoor recreation, and one I hope to enjoy for many days to come.
