How To Skim Coat Old Plaster Or Drywall
Do you have an old plaster wall or ceiling with a rough texture you just don't like? Skim coat it. Do you want to put up wallpaper, but you need a smooth wall first? Skim coat it. Are you just plain tired of textured walls or ceilings? Skim coat 'em. Did you fix those plaster cracks or holes and now just want everything to look the same? Skim coat it. Yes, smoothing out your old plaster walls or ceiling will get you closer to what you want. But have you given any thought to just how you are going do that? I have seen people fly at that old plaster with determination and energy, but the result was an awful mess. What they lacked was an easy, step by step system, an orderly approach that will get the job done with a minumum of stress and mess. After skim coating acres (well, almost!)of walls and ceilings over the years myself, I think I have figured out how to do it, and I am eager to pass on what I have learned. With that in mind, I have put up a page that explains some things everyone should know who is contemplating doing skim coat for themselves. I recommend using drywall finishing tools and drywall joint compound. Not all joint compounds are created equal, and I point out the advantages and disadvantages of several popular varieties.
