Dealing With Calcimine On Old Plaster

Got peeling paint? Can't keep it painted for long? Your old plaster got you frustrated?

You may be dealing with calcimine, unknowingly. You have a layer of stuff under your paint layers that is unstable and will likely continue to cause you grief until you fix the problem.

Calcimine, also known as kalsomine, was a common paint substitute used in old houses. It was applied over raw plaster and served as a paint-like decoration until the plaster was fully cured.

Later, when real paint was put on those plaster walls and ceilings, it was often not able to bond properly to the chalk-like calcimine layer.

Fixing calcimine is necessary because until it is dealt with, it will continue to make it difficult for your paint job to stay peeling and bubble-free.

This means getting down through all the years of paint to that troublesome chalk layer and removing it. This takes work, pure and simple.

In my experience, several steps are necessary. We are looking here at treating with localized trouble spots.

First, scrape to remove all peeling and loose paint. Second, wet the exposed surfaces and wire brush them vigorously. Finish scrubbing with a good sponge until the raw plaster is exposed.

Fill any holes. Using paper drywall tape and joint compound, treat any exposed plaster cracks like drywall seams. After the tape is dry, top coat with a couple successive layers of compound.

When all is dry, sand out defects and texture the treated areas back in to match the surrounding area.

If the problem areas extend over a whole wall or ceiling, the most efficient way to deal with the calcimine may be simply to overlay the whole area with thin drywall, usually 3/8 rock for the ceilings, and 1/4 inch rock for the walls.

If this is too much for you to handle, you can get a drywall professional to do it for you. See my website at DRYWALL CONTRACTOR to get no-obligation cost estimates from professionals in your local area.
