Can You Do Plaster Repair For Yourself?
When people look around their home's interior, and see damaged or ugly plaster, they often wonder - can I fix this myself, or am I going to have to pay for a professional to do this for me? As a professional plaster repair person, I encounter all kinds of people. Some are motivated homeowners and they want to do their own plaster repair, but they turn to me for instruction. Others call me, describe the plaster problems they have on their walls or ceilings, and want me to look and give a price. They just want to get it done. We agree on a price (not cheap!), and I do what they are asking for. They are happy and I get paid. For the first group though, the motivated homeowner, the process is less simple. They hire me to show them the steps I take to repair plaster and they work alongside me until they think they know enough to go it alone. Often this involves me checking up on them when they call with questions. The thing that I have enjoyed seeing over the years is that many people find plaster repair to be something they really can do, and boy! are they proud when they finish and can show off what they have done. They really get a rush feeling of achievement. One reason that motivated homeowners can experience success in this is because the system I teach them is not complicated. It involves doing one step at a time, working at their own pace, and taking as many days as they want. The materials I show them how to use are inexpensive and easily attainable at any home improvement store. So, what is my system? To put it in a nutshell, it is treating plaster problems with drywall joint compound and drywall finishing tools. A plastering professional will just about have a heart attack when you tell him that you can repair plaster this way. Plasterers are wedded to their trade, and rightly so, because they are highly trained professionals who have spent years perfecting their knowledge and skills. So ... why don't I treat plaster problems in the way they do? I began my training under a drywall contractor who was very good at his business. I learned to use drywall finishing tools and materials, and I got good at it myself. When I encountered plaster problems on a job, I approached the solution using the knowledge and training I already had as a drywall guy. And, you know what? It worked. I found I could do very nice plaster repair and renovation using my drywall experience, and I have many many years of successful projects under my belt. For the homeowner who wants to repair his own plaster problems, the learning curve is much shorter and easier than if he tried to approach it like a plasterer. Real plaster is a difficult medium. It requires specialized knowledge and skill to do well. Not many homeowners, not matter how motivated they may be, are going to be successful with real plaster right out of the gate. Drywall finishing materials are easy to handle, are forgiving (easily correctable) and less expensive than real plaster. And, used properly, they stick well to old plaster. So this is why I recommend them. |
