Beautify Old Plaster Walls With New Textures
The question arises - when is the right time to texture my old plaster walls or ceilings, during my home renovation project? The answer is - when you are done repairing your plaster. You know, fixing those unsightly plaster holes and cracks. The plastered interiors of homes are usually covered with some kind of wall or ceiling texture. When you repair the defects, you end up with flat spots. To bring all the surface to the same look, you will need to skim coat the whole wall or ceiling. Now, if you want to put on wallpaper or just paint it smooth, you're there. But if you want to match the texture on adjacent walls, for example, then you have another step to complete. New texture over your now smoothed surface. Applying new texture is a fun project for the motivated homeowner. You have the chance to be creative and really do something personal, something that says YOU. Some people are put off by the whole idea. Are you one of those? You may think, "but I'm not artistic. I couldn't do that." Are you sure? The truth is, I don't consider myself "artistic" either, but I have been earning my living for 38 years ('08) by doing plaster repair and renovation, which includes acres of personally applied wall and ceiling textures. I had the good fortune to train under a man who WAS artistic and a master at applying textures to walls and ceilings. And what he showed me was, I was quite capable of being taught to do what he did. I learned. In my own professional life, I have had the pleasure of being hired by folks who had a desire to do as much for themselves as they could, and that included repairing and renovating their old drywall or plaster interiors. I worked with them, taught them, and the results were gratifying to them and to myself. Being teachable, and willing to practice and learn, they were able to do a job on their home that had all the appearance of a professional application. With this experience behind me, I decided to put up a website where I could share what I have learned over the years with DIY homeowners. My site has tons of free resources (and a few paid) to guide anyone who will take the time to read. Included are three pages with information about texturizing repaired plaster walls and ceilings. My hope is that folks will find useful information there to motivate and guide them as they seek to beautify their home interiors with a truly personal touch. |
